On Dec. 12, 1985, Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed shortly after takeoff crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, leaving no survivors. Among the dead were 248 soldiers who were returning home following a 6-month peacekeeping mission to the Sinai Peninsula in the Middle East. This story, publish on the 30th anniversary of the crash, is about how this event changed the lives of soldiers who served during the same mission and suffer from survivor’s guilt. Several years ago, the group Welcome Home from Vietnam joined forces with the Tennessee State Council Vietnam Veterans of America to give Vietnam veterans the opportunity to march in a parade. The first parade in 2013 was in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and was moved to Clarksville. The first welcome home parade took place Sept. 15, 2015, and this is live coverage of the event. When a service member dies while serving in combat the family becomes what is known as a Gold Star Family. The people who take care of these families work for Survivor Outreach Service. This story features a Gold Star Spouse who talks about how the staff of SOS helped her through one of the most difficult times in her life and gives a behind the scenes glimpse into a service that does not get much press. Features story – Missing Sgt. Mommy

In late April 2010, I put out a request for Leaf-Chronicle to share their Mother’s Day stories and Eric Patterson responded. Patterson was taking care of his children while his wife was deployed to Afghanistan. He speaks about the challenges he faced while his wife was serving in a war zone.
